E3: Nintendo Press Conference

E3: Nintendo Press Conference

Last Tuesday Nintendo held their press conference and for better or worse, it was typical Nintendo fashion. So let’s highlight what was good and what was bad of their event.

The Good:

New Zelda Title: The new Legend of Zelda game, called Skyward Sword makes you use the wii-mote (with motion plus) and nunchuk as a sword and shield. And from the trailer that they showed it looks amazing!

New Goldeneye Game: Finally, a spiritual remake to the classic Goldeneye game that people been waiting for a long, long time. With split screen and online multiplayer, different bond characters, and special game modes make everything feels like 1997 again.

Epic Mickey: The guys from Disney Interactive Studios came to the Nintendo Press Conference to show a demo of Epic Mickey, and I was impressed! The levels in Epic Mickey can range from 2D to a 3D platformer. Also Mickey only have two tools in this game, a paint brush and thinner. And with those two tools you decided whether to create objects or destroy it, turn enemies into friends or defeat them. The possibilities are endless with Epic Mickey.

Two Classic Nintendo Characters Makes Their Debut On Wii:The Big N showed off Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Country Returns. Kirby’s Epic Yarn looks like classic Kirby games from years past, but in yarn form. And Donkey Kong Country Returns takes Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong back to their roots from the SNES days. Both of these games will be 2D side platformers.

No Vitality Senor!!!: At last year’s E3, Nintendo made the Vitality Senor one of it’s prime focus, and people was less than enthusiastic on the peripheral. Now this year they made no mention of the thing. Could it be that Nintendo thinks that the Vitality Senor is accessory that nobody wants?

Unveiling of The 3DS/Kid Icarus: Saving the best for last, Satoru Iwata show off the Nintendo 3DS. The most appealing feature about the 3DS is the ability to view the games in 3D without the need for special glasses. The 3DS is also capable of taking pictures in 3D with the help of two cameras on the front. The first game they show for it was a new Kid Icarus title, and it looks impressive. The visuals for that game is near Wii quality. Other games they announced for the 3DS is a new Metal Gear Solid title, Pilotwings, a Resident Evil title, Starfox 64, and others. And oh, did I mentioned that the 3DS is capable of playing movies in 3D?

The Bad:

Technical Difficulties With The Skyward Sword Demo: When Shigeru Miyamoto was trying to show the way Link moves and do stuff in Skyward Sword demo, things was not going as smoothly as it should been. For example, he couldn’t aim properly with the bow and arrow and the sword swinging wasn’t really working for him. Miyamoto was trying to blame the technical difficulties on wireless interference. It wasn’t a good way to start off the press conference…

Wii Party/Mario Sports Mix: Hated it!

No New Original IPs: It’s great to see games like Metroid:Other M, Donkey Kong, and others, but there’s no Original games coming from the House of Nintendo. I guess they are playing it safe and reselling your childhood, but I would really like to see something new and exciting from them.

And The WTF:

Apparently The 3DS is evil and sucks the souls of Nintendo executives and breaths fire…awesome.

Conclusion:

Nintendo had a very rough start at the beginning with Skyward Sword but pick up some steam in the middle by announcing some promising games like Epic Mickey and hit a home run with the 3DS. If I were to grade their conference, I would give it a solid B.
